More Than A Feeling

Faith is more than a feeling (James 2:15-18) Some of you will sing Boston’s hit for the rest of the day, enjoy that ring back. How do you respond, When you hear that old song they used to play? Do you tell the old old story, do you live out the old old story of Jesus Christ’s command? James says that saving faith without good works is dead. James 2:15~If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, (ESV) We are not talking about sign holders on Tyvola, where four people work the same bridge. Rather, someone who is in desperate need.

James 2:16~and one says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? (ESV) How do you respond to a legitimate need, showing compassion? How would it sit with you if your waitress sat you and then stopped by your table two minutes later and said be warmed and filled in Jesus name, here is your check. I bet you would have more than a feeling as you saw Marianne walkin’ away. James 2:17~So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (ESV)

Listen as the Apostle John bolsters this position in 1 John 3:17~But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? (ESV) James writes faith without works is dead. I know, some of you are chopping at the bit to quote Paul. By grace we were saved, it is a gift! Just hold your horses a cotton-picking minute. Nobody is boasting about their works. See right after Paul tells us we’re saved by grace he says in Ephesians 2:10~For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (ESV)

That is why there is no contradiction because salvation is by grace, through faith, unto good works. Listen to Luther, who was not a fan of the Book of James as he shares that We are saved by faith alone, but a faith that saves is never alone. James 2:18~But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (ESV)

Saving faith can only be verified one way; by witnessing the works or fruit that is produced by faith at work in our lives. If we really and truly believe the teachings of Jesus we will obey Galatians 6:10~Therefore, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. (NIV) Faith is more than a feeling, it wants to see Jesus Christ make a difference in another person’s life, and in our world.

Today, let us make our faith more than just a feeling. When the moment arises, let us step out in faith and allow the Lord to use us as we trust Him to give us the words to help others, to encourage others, and to lead others to Jesus. There is no greater satisfaction than when the Lord uses us to lead someone to Him. Take time to ask the Lord to help you share the good news and to help others come to know Him.
