Encouragement — Awaiting His Arrival — 1 Thessalonians 5.1-3…Handout

The Day of the Lord, Christ’s return will be a time of _______ and separating. The Rapture is discussed by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17. All__________ (those dead in Christ and those alive in Christ) will be united with the Lord in the air. Like the Thessalonians, many have questions about the return of Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:1~Now concerning the times and the_________, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. (ESV) Awaiting His Arrival: It Will, __________.

1) It will affect the world_________(5:2a) 1 Thessalonians 5:2~For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a_______ in the night. (ESV) To properly understand the Day of the Lord we need some Old Testament background. Isaiah 13:9~See, the day of the LORD is coming –a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger…(NIV) Many of the prophets share the impending day of the Lord. (Ezekiel____, Joel 1:15, 2:1, Zephaniah 1:14) This event is described in Revelation 6-___ as the Great Tribulation. Revelation 6:12~I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned________ red, (NIV) Jesus even tells us before His crucifixion, Matthew 24:29~ Immediately after the distress of those days…the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. (NIV) The stars_______ from the sky could be a description of an exchange of nuclear weapons. However, this is just speculation. What we know is there will be great and horrible distress. 2 Thessalonians 1:9~They will suffer punishment, eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord…(ESV) They’ll suffer not only during the_________, but also for all eternity in the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14-15)

2) It will happen_____________ (5:2b-3c) Like a thief in the night, the Lord will return. 1 Thessalonians 5:3~ While people are saying, There is peace and________, then suddenly…(ESV) This describes an attitude, that the world will have, not a particular time. Jesus says, As in the days of_______. (Matthew 24:37) Our Lord says that in Noah’s day they were eating, drinking, partying. They were marrying, which means they were going about their daily lives undisturbed by the____________. As America__________ it takes comfort in being known as the superpower, or hegemon, it’s happening today. Matthew 24:44~So you also must be ready…(ESV) 1 Thessalonians 5:3~While people are saying …_______& security, sudden destruction will come…and they will not escape. (ESV) Apparently, the word they refers to non-believers left behind at the Rapture. God always protects his children. Noah and his family got into the _______. (Genesis 7:7) The angels urge Lot to_______. (Genesis 19:15-16) Jesus tells the church in___________ He’ll keep them from the hour of trial, coming. (Revelation 3:10) Suddenly, like labor pains, which once begin, there is no_______. Understand the Lord’s_____ has been building up over time. The disciples, like all believers, want to know, WHEN? Acts 1:7~…It is not for you to know…(ESV) Instead spend your time witnessing.
