Cancel Your Pride

Today, let’s talk about how the Lord asks us to cancel our pride. (26:31-35) Pride is when we think too much of ourselves and our spiritual stamina. Paul writes to us in Romans 12:3~As your spiritual teacher I give this piece of advice to each one of you. Don’t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or your importance, but try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities by the light of the faith that God has given to you all. (JBP) Because of the disciples’ pride, Jesus tells them they will fall away because of Him later that night. (26:31)

The disciples will soon be scattered and will hide in fear because of what happens. Therefore, our Lord Jesus adds that, after He is resurrected, He will go ahead of them to Galilee. He is predicting to them their reunion in Galilee, and we can read about these events that are recorded in John 21, after His resurrection. Full of pride, Pete stands to boasts that even if all the others fall away because of Jesus, he never will (26:32-33). However, Jesus says in Matthew 26:34~“Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” (ESV)

Pete cannot believe these crushing words that have been spoken over him, that he will ever deny his Lord? Therefore, he pridefully states that even if he must die with Jesus, he will not deny Him. Then, all the disciples say the same thing (26:35). The disciples should have remembered the wise warning of Proverbs 11:2~When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. (NIV) Pride causes us to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to. Please don’t let pride keep you from honestly examining every area of your life and then taking time to confess all sin.

Today, why not take a moment and ask the Lord to help examine your life and remove anything that is prideful. To help you work on those areas that you need His help. I want you to know this is humbling work and it takes the Lord’s help to change and become who He has planned, created, and purposed you to be. You have got this, with the Lord’s help.
