Called to Righteousness

Listen to the declaration in Nehemiah 9:36~Behold, we are slaves this day; in the land that you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts, behold, we are slaves. (ESV) Nehemiah 9:37~And its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress. (ESV) Let’s follow the model. First, we take our decisions, our debt, our great need of what rules our finances to God, saying we are slaves. Then we allow Him to help us make better decisions, we pray and remind Him, just as the people did here in Nehemiah that He is Lord over all! They said we’re still servants or slaves to our past. This is a sad confession of what they had realized—that coming back from Babylon, from being imprisoned because of sin, they were inhibited to live in the fulfillment of God’s promises made in Isaiah 11:11-16~In that day the Lord will reach out…a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant…He will raise a banner for the nations…assemble the scattered…together they will plunder the people to the east…There will be a highway for the remnant of his people…(like)…when they came up from Egypt. (NIV)

They couldn’t change the servitude they were in, but they could surrender themselves to a greater Master and seek His help. By rejecting the world and spring only God, they would be the remnant through whom blessing flows. Saints we must become vessels of God’s blessing for the nations. When Jesus Christ came to earth, He came to establish a covenant with all the people, in every corner of the globe. I love how Ezekiel says 11:26~And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh (ESV) Ezekiel 11:31~Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, (ESV) This covenant is in Jesus Christ the Lord and our Savior. Discipleship is about rejecting the world, its systems, and values, as we cling to Jesus Christ. Consider A New Way of Thinking: Confess, Reject, Execute.

Execute Righteousness (Nehemiah 10:28-31; Ephesians 5:3-7). By definition execute means to carry out or to put into effect, while it also means put to death. Paul writes in Colossians 3:2and5~Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things…Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. (NIV) This is the same challenge before Nehemiah 10:28~The rest of the people…priests…Levites…gatekeepers…singers…temple servants, and all who have separated themselves…to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, their daughters, all who have knowledge and understanding, (ESV).

Nehemiah 10:29~join with their brothers, their nobles, and enter into a curse and an oath to walk in God’s Law…(ESV) I love Zophar’s first response in Job 11:13-20 he says commit yourself to God completely. Reach out your hands for help Get rid of all the sin, Don’t let anything evil stay in your home, free of those things, you can face others, stand firm without fear, you’ll forget your troubles, They’ll be like water that’s flowed on by.
